Is he or she or the agency recommended by investigative groups, friends, or acquaintances? Anything from the Internet? Have there been any criminal records in the past? Any financial problems that might influence the job?

Does the private investigator or agency give progress reports, or does it depend on the terms and conditions for discretion that you may have in mind? How does he or she report to you? How will your personal data and case files be kept? Will it be stored in a computer or in an offline storage unit? Is it secure? It had better be.

Will the private investigator or agency provide you with an estimate on their total charges for your case? Will he or she require a retainer? How about the expenses on the job and reimbursements? What insurance policies does the agency have? What are their policies in cases of malpractice and breach of contract? You have to ask this to avoid any legal problems or liabilities.
